Wings vs. Wheels

Drags, burn-outs, drifting and warbirds. Just a typical summer's Sunday in South Auckland...

There were cars there for the show and shine....

But in all honesty, only a few nice classics that grabbed my attention. Most of the rest were fairly modern boy racer types (although... I must admit... a few were nicely presented). This was my favourite though. It just speaks for itself...

Then there were the drag races.... fairly boring except for guys who obviously had lots of tyres on hand!

Lee had been playing around with some very slow shutter speeds to increase blurring and give some other effects. I thought I'd give a try too.... worked out pretty well (but keep an eye out on Lee's blog for what he was up to).

And I'm not sure about the souped up Cortina... the guy was having fun though. I think he had to push it up to the starting point most times though (saving fuel maybe!?) :)

In between the car stuff, the Warbirds team also put on a nice little display. Photography was so much easier due to being on the opposite side of the airfield!

On static display...

Yak 52's...

Spitfire.... off which I am very happy with my shots... got quite a good selection to work with.

Stunt Aircraft (Extreme 300 & Zlin)...

Strikemaster... the heavy cloud started to make things a little tougher photography wise...

Harvards... #92 & Roaring 40's...

Initially, I didn't like the next one, but looking at it again... it's one of my favourites from the day. I think it works quite nicely with the 2 Harvards slightly out of focus in the background...

And finally, the Tiger Moth. Another great display...

This next one was an interesting one. Apart from some heavy cropping and just a little bit of darkening... it is as shot. Ended up with a pretty cool silhouette effect...

Back to car stuff now.... and the fun stuff! It was definitely much more fun watching the cars doing some burnouts or trying to drift. It basically seemed like the drivers were just going hard until their rear tyres popped! I reckon some tyre stores would have been doing some good business before and after Sunday :)

But nothing like this guy...

He was just going for it.... so much so that this happened...

And we have ignition!

Still... he seemed like he was enjoying himself... and no real damage done.

The organisers had also set-up a couple of other stunts during the day. The first was some drift cars racing a helicopter. Pretty cool to watch, but too far away for some really good shots...

The second was a jet car vs. Strikemaster race, but I think they didn't quite get the timing right? Anyway, I missed the shot with the Strikemaster coming in past the jet car. But... they did fire up the jet car later in the day.

It's not the best photo, but it gives you an idea of what the jet car is.... a jet engine with a seat next to it! No thank you...

Still.. it was pretty cool to watch it fire up and switch on the afterburners!

All in all, a pretty good day. In some ways it was a shame about the afternoon cloud and small showers... except for the fact that it would have been a scorcher otherwise!

Photography wise, it was nice to have the differing events to shoot and play around with. Some good practice for Omaka which only just around the corner!

Thanks for looking :)

Crossfit Update

I figured I haven't talked enough about Crossfit on here, so I'm failing the first rule of Crossfit :)

Really, I'm just stoked with getting another PB tonight, but I haven't really tracked them anywhere.

So this blog post is to record my current weights so I can better track my progress (and maybe show off... just a little :) ).

Since changing up to 3 classes a week for Crossfit (I also do 2 boxing fitness and 2 BodyBalance classes a week as well...) I am definitely getting much stronger and much fitter.

Wall balls & box jumps are getting easier. Rope climbs still suck and I still struggle with double unders. My kipping is getting better.

I'm definitely enjoying all the Olympic Lifting moves. So where am I up to...?

My current 1RM's are:

Back Squat - 100kg
Front Squat - 90kg
Overhead Squat - 45kg
Strict Press - 50kg

And tonight's....

Full Squat Clean - 72kg

Just getting a little better on the high pull component of the move so I can drop a little quicker will see that weight head up pretty quick. I'd got my sights set on 80kg as a milestone here (my bodyweight).

We haven't done Deadlifts for a while so I haven't recorded a PB there and I still struggle a little with Snatches, so no PB there either (I think the most I have done is a 40kg power snatch, but can't really remember).

Finally, I have done one of the Crossfit benchmark WOD's now as well....

"Fran" - 6m 58s (scale 1 - 35kg thrusters plus pull-ups with band)

(If you're curious on what some of the moves are, then have a quick search on google).

Not bad after a back injury late last year.

Oh, and yes, I am still pretty much on the clean eating diet. I should really have my body composition measured again, but can't be bothered. I can tell that I'm looking pretty good and, best of all, last time I checked, I hadn't dropped any weight either.

Crossfit is awesome.

Being fit and strong is awesome.

Bring it on 2015. I'm looking to seeing where this journey takes me.
